Towards a Cognitive Model for Human Wayfinding Behavior in Regionalized Environments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Human wayfinding operates very very differently from traditional deterministic algorithms owing to a) restrictions in working memory resulting in subjective regionalized maps, and b) flexible adoption of different navigation strategies. While a number of cognitive strategies have been proposed for human wayfinding, these have been hard to evaluate thoroughly owing to a lack of computational simulation. In this work, we propose a stochastic approach for capturing these aspects, and argue for a memoryless, stationary implementation. In two longitudinal experiments on the same group of subjects, we first estimate the subjective regionalized maps for each subject on the same familiar spatial domain. Later, based on their wayfinding responses, we can estimate the stationary probabilities for different strategies. We apply this algorithm to evaluate three wayfinding strategies proposed in the literature, and repudiate the previously held suggestion that they are followed

Adaptable Path Planning in Regionalized Environments
Human path planning relies on several more aspects than only geometric distance between two locations. These additional aspects mostly relate to the complexity of the traveled path. Accordingly, in recent years several cognitively motivated path search algorithms have been developed that try to minimize wayfinding complexity. However, the calculated paths may result in large detours as geometri...
متن کاملComparing the complexity of wayfinding tasks in built environments
Wayfinding is a basic activity that people do throughout their entire lives as they navigate from one place to another. Many theories of spatial cognition have been developed to account for this behavior; however, most of the computational models focus on knowledge representation (e.g., cognitive maps) and do not consider the process of how people structure wayfinding tasks and space. This pape...
متن کاملWayfinding Decision Situations: A Conceptual Model and Evaluation
Humans engage in wayfinding many times a day. We try to find our way in urban environments when walking towards our work places or when visiting a city as tourists. In order to reach the targeted destination, we have to make a series of wayfinding decisions of varying complexity. Previous research has focused on classifying the complexity of these wayfinding decisions, primarily looking at the ...

Background Wayfinding involves behavior in order to navigate between the two points of origin and destination. The importance of this issue is considerable; because facility of wayfinding is directly related to improving the efficiency of space, and its psychological effects on human life. This study focuses on the effective physical factors in the wayfinding of ...

Wayfinding Wayfinding is a complex human activity involving moving along while evaluating alternatives and making decisions. It is defined as a spatial problem solving process with the three sub-processes decision-making, decision execution, and information processing. In our research we focus on the information processing aspect of wayfinding. Our main scientific goal is a cognitively plausibl...
